Take it personal....finding the perfect fitting hat

Finding the perfect fitting hat is part science and part art...

When finding the "perfect hat" there are many factors to take into account,  but essentially with the exception of sizing.  it really boils down to personal preference..

The 1st step is to determine your size.  You can always return the item but you wouldn't order a pair of pants online without at least knowing your normal size.. right?

So the most efficient method of sizing requires you to measure your head right above your ears in the vicinity of where you like your hat to sit when you wear your hat.

A tailors tape measure is the best tool but if you don't have one, don't worry you don't need to get one..   You can substitute the flexible tape measure with a simple piece of string or yarn.. If your really in a bind you can use dental floss.. everyone should have that at their disposal (lets hope this is true) .

Wrap the tape or string around your head, making sure you measure where you like your hat to sit when you wear your hat.  Take the measurement off of the tape measure or if using a string.  mark the string with a marker or similar marking tool, in a pinch you can cut it at the reference point.

If using a string type method..from there carefully take the string and rest the string flat on a construction tape measure or yardstick  or similar measuring tool and transfer the measurement..

Viola you now know your measurement.  Now all you have to do is translate that into fitted sizing to know exactly what size you are..

There are many sizing charts often manufacturer specific but we will include generic one for your general knowledge.

Of course it is really a matter of personal choice, but when in doubt of where to measure it is best to measure the widest part of your head.  Often that is where caps generally tend to gravitate when put on.  Once you have the measuremt keep it handy it will serve you regardless what style hat you choose. We will discuss those types of hats in future blogs..

A couple of things to keep in mind ..

When taking the initial measurement you should measure several times to ensure you’re getting an accurate measurement.  Kinda like counting a stack of bills it's always better to err to the side of caution and count several times to insure accuracy  ;-)

If your measurement falls between 2 sizes it is usually best to go to the larger size,  It is more comfortable to have a looser fitting hat than a too snug hat to snug means it will end up in your closet to be donated to Salvation Army a decade from now..

When measuring your dome don't pull too tight on the measuring tool.. You always should err to looser fit than tighter sizing
